FAMILYBOARD / PRIVACY
Your data, explained.
Effective November 1, 2026
FamilyBoard is a self-hosted family dashboard created and maintained by Lucas Van Drunen. This policy covers the public FamilyBoard website and the FamilyBoard software as provided for personal household use.
1. The public website
This informational website does not provide Google sign-in, collect calendar events, or host your FamilyBoard dashboard. It has no registration forms, advertising, analytics scripts, tracking cookies, or embedded third-party media. Fonts and styles are served with the site.
The hosting provider, Render, processes ordinary technical request information, such as IP addresses and browser information, to deliver and protect the website. That processing is subject to Render’s privacy policy. If you email us, your message and contact details are used to respond to your request and may be retained for that correspondence.
2. Google Calendar data and why it is accessed
After you authorize FamilyBoard, the software uses the Google Calendar API with the read-only permission https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.readonly. It reads calendars available to your connected account, including shared or subscribed calendars, and event information needed for the dashboard.
- Calendar identifiers, names, and colors: to discover calendars, let you choose what to display, and distinguish event sources.
- Event identifiers, titles, start and end times, all-day status, descriptions, and locations: to show schedules and read-only event details.
- Authorization tokens: to retrieve and refresh calendar information without repeatedly asking you to sign in.
Google’s API responses may include additional event metadata. FamilyBoard’s display model uses the fields described above. Calendar visibility is a display preference; the server may fetch events from discovered calendars even when they are hidden on the display.
Google Calendar data is used to provide the household calendar display. FamilyBoard does not use it for advertising, sell it, or use it to train artificial intelligence or machine-learning models. FamilyBoard does not create, change, or delete your Google Calendar events.
3. Photos and weather
If you enable photos, FamilyBoard stores the public Apple Shared Album links you provide, indexes album metadata, and downloads a limited working set of images to your computer. It does not ask for your Apple Account password. A public shared-album link can be viewed by anyone who has it, so choose albums you are comfortable using this way.
If you enable weather, the server sends location searches or your selected location’s coordinates to Open-Meteo to obtain forecasts. These providers receive the network information associated with those requests. Their services are governed by their respective privacy policies.
4. Where data is stored and who can see it
Calendar settings, authorization tokens, photo settings and cached images, and weather settings are stored on the computer running FamilyBoard. Calendar events are fetched by that server and held in memory by the display; the current application does not maintain a separate persistent calendar-event database. Local diagnostic logs and backups may retain technical information.
Google authorization tokens are kept on the server and are not sent to the iPad display. Tokens are stored in a local file; FamilyBoard does not provide application-level encryption for that file. Access to the computer and its backups should be limited to people you trust.
The local dashboard is intended for a trusted home network and does not have individual user accounts. People or devices able to access the running local service may be able to view household information and use its settings. The default local connection uses HTTP. This public website does not provide access to that service.
5. Sharing and third-party services
Calendar information passes between Google, your local server, and the browsers accessing your dashboard. Photo and weather features communicate with Apple and Open-Meteo. A self-hosted installation does not automatically send household calendar data, photos, or Google tokens to Lucas Van Drunen or to this public website. If you voluntarily send diagnostic information for support, remove private event details and credentials first.
FamilyBoard’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
6. Retention, disconnection, and deletion
Local settings and credentials remain until you remove them or disconnect the service. Cached photos are rotated as part of synchronization. You control the installation and any backups.
- In FamilyBoard, open Settings → Calendars → Disconnect. This deletes the locally stored Google token and resets calendar settings. Reload the dashboard to clear previously displayed events.
- To revoke Google authorization as well, remove FamilyBoard from your Google Account connections. Removing the local token alone does not revoke authorization at Google.
- To remove all local FamilyBoard data, stop the app and delete its
dataandlogsfolders and any copies or backups you made. This includes cached photos and local configuration. It does not delete original Google Calendar events or Apple album photos. - For information you sent directly by email, contact us to request deletion. We may retain information when needed to meet legal obligations.
7. Household use and children
FamilyBoard is configured by an adult household operator. The public website does not invite children to register or submit personal information. Household members may view information the operator chooses to display.
8. Changes and contact
Changes to this policy will be posted here with an updated effective date. For privacy questions or requests, contact Lucas Van Drunen at lucas.vandrunen@gmail.com.
